A business owner was found in violation of zoning compliance by operating a bar with amplified music and dancing, according to the Macon-Bibb County Planning & Zoning Commission.
During Monday’s meeting, business owner Marshall Hughes apologized to neighbors who had been disturbed by noise from his club at 3690 Eisenhower Parkway. The building is the location of the former Circuit City building, and it backs up to a residential neighborhood.
“We told you you couldn’t operate a dance club, and it looks like you are,” said chairman Damon King.
In April, Hughes was denied permission for a nightclub, but was approved for a sports bar.
Hughes said that while he didn’t have a designated dance floor, sometimes people would start dancing to the music.
“I haven’t had any crime there and no other violations,” he said. “I have been running a fine establishment.”
James Chamblee, who lives behind the club, said he appreciated Hughes apologizing for the noise.
“I wouldn’t want to stand in the way of any business, but I don’t like all that racket,” said Chamblee, who has lived there since 1960.
When asked by Commissioner Jacqueline Hightower how he was going to fix it, Hughes said he already had.
“The only way to fix it is to stop,” Hughes said, adding that he had already closed the club. His club in Macon Mall, JoNita’s Press Club, will remain open, he said.
In another matter, an application for a conditional-use permit to allow a self-service car wash at 5440 Bowman Road was withdrawn by the applicant prior to the meeting.
